standing still Songs

With the Waves of the Ocean: This song is about a failing relationship in which the two people cannot stop using drugs, and it is ruining their relationship and their lives. They haven't been connecting in a healthy way for a long time, and they have to take a step back and rethink their lives. They have to find a way to start over, no matter how hard it may be. I thought of the idea for this song when I was thinking about my sister, who passed away about eight years ago. She struggled with drugs for a long time, so I decided to use that idea in my song. This is more or less a song from her point of view and/or people like her.

Red Flowers: Over the summer of 2015, I took a trip to Switzerland with my family. We went hiking in the mountains for about a week, and it was very beautiful. I will always remember the big fields of flowers. This is where the visual of "red flowers" comes from. During this trip, I was going through some things back home, and I was really missing my friends and the comfort they gave me. While this sounds a lot like a love song, it is more of a song of friendship, though it has its ups and downs. The album cover is from that trip.

Heart's on Fire (feat Caley Vahedi): This is a cover of one of my favorite Passenger songs. I love the simplicity of the song. In our version, it's just two people saying how much they love each other. Caley is one of my best friends, and I loved doing this song with her.

Out of Sight: Like many of my songs, this one was inspired by a couple different things going on in my brain. This is a song about long-distance relationships. The song is partially inspired by a girl I know who lives across the country. We tried to have something, but the distance made that impossible. The other half of the inspiration for this song comes from one of my all-time favorite TV shows, "The Office". In it, one of character's girlfriend has to move, and he is debating whether to drive to see her on weekends or just break it off, but he says that it would be a lot of driving for one day with her. This is what the main line in the song is based off of.

Nothing to Prove: This song is a fictional story about a boy who is treated very poorly by his parents. He loves to sing, but his parents won't have it. They want him to be a "normal" boy, but all he wants to do is sing. He runs away into the woods, where he can sing all he wants. His mom calls the authorities and they find him and bring him home. The last line of the last verse, "convincing kids they were to blame" refers to the men who picked him up. It's a really sad line, and it's about how everyone makes this kid feel like it's his fault that he has a different dream. I started to feel really bad for this kid as I wrote the song, even though I made him up.

Wine and Bread: This song was a last minute addition to the album. I had a song that I wasn't sure about, and I ended up writing this one as a backup, but I liked it more. The song is about not being able to communicate with someone who you deeply care about. The guy in the song feels like he is ruining this relationship because he can't say what's on his mind, and he feels like he is slipping away from the person he loves. He realizes what he has to do, but he is to afraid to do it.

Take My Heart to the Moon: I was in a really adventurous mood when I wrote this song. The idea just came to me to write a song about being free. I feel stressed a lot, and this song is about breaking free of the chains of this world and flying free. While it is literally about leaving and traveling the world, it can be taken more figuratively. It is also just about letting yourself feel calm and loose, and letting your heart be free.

Remember: This is a sad song about falling in love with your best friend, and knowing it can't happen. This happened to me, and it was a hard experience. It just changes everything. In this song, I reflect on what we used to do together, how much fun we had before this all happened. We could talk and laugh about anything. I think this is a good song to wrap up the album with. Though sad, it holds a great friendship. It reminds us all to reflect on the good times we had. They will help us through the tough ones.
